Australia has continued to expand its work and holiday schemes by signing visa agreements with new countries and increasing visa quotas for countries that are already participating in the program. This does not mean much when looking at the numbers. The agreement between Australia and Thailand will see that Australia increases the number of work and holiday visas available for citizens from each country from the current 200 per year to 500 per year. The scheme is not new neither unique to the nations concerned. The work visas are aimed at young persons from participating nations between the ages of 18 and 30 to work in each other's country for up to 12 months. The persons apply through the visa scheme must have a degree in higher education alternatively if they are busy studying that must have completed at least the first 2 years of study. The crux of the program however rests on the language requirements. Other requirements include the requirement that they must speak English or the language of the destination country. Thailand was the first South East Asian country to sign a Work and Holiday agreement with Australia in July of 2004."Each year almost 50 000 Thai people visit Australia, and Thailand is a popular destination for Australians with over 300 000 departures to Thailand every year.
