Not much surprise that Thailand has banned the very popular action game, Grand Theft Auto. The game has been criticized globally for the level of violence in the game coupled with the realism in it's graphics. Grand Theft Auto (GTA) was banned last week Tuesday. GTA made headlines in Bangkok just over a week ago when a teenage killed a Bangkok taxi driver after playing the popular game. Different newspaper sources are claiming different motives for the killing. Some have claimed that after playing the game, he wondered how it would feel if he went out and committed these crimes in real life while other newspaper sources report that the teenage had run out of money and wanted money to play more games. In the GTA game, killing gives you points or money in order to buy weapons and other commodities in the game.
The game has been removed from shelves in stores in Thailand and has been banned under Thailand's obscenity laws and under Criminal Article 287, which prohibits reproduction, distribution or possession of such material in Thailand carries with it penalties including but not limited to three years in prison and a fine up to 6,000 baht (180 dollars). Online sellers contravening these laws are however subject to an even stiffer penalties of five years imprisonment and/or a 100,000 baht (3,000 dollars) fine. The New Era Interactive Media company, the only legal distributor of the games, said earlier Tuesday it would remove the game from sale in Thailand.
